Celebrate Crieff: Power Point Presentation

I had to do a wee presentation the other evening about my Secessionville painting and the linked community projects I'm doing alongside it to promote the 19th century happennings of emigration to America from my small Scottish town of Crieff.
It's the first Power point presentation I've done although I have used slides and overhead projection before. There were two other speakers, so all three presentations were put together in the correct running order and presented as one 'slideshow'.
I had help from my bloke with the layout of the slides and their artwork, but the whole thing is a lovely easy way to do a presentation....then the power of the web kicks in. Because it's all computer work, you can share the whole thing by going to a fantastic site called slideshare - who knew?

Secessionville Painting, start-up!

I've no idea what the composition will be, but I've begun preparing a canvas for the battle painting!

Why make gesso for one, when you can squash 3 or 4 canvasses into a space?

Some of the paints I'll use. This is my 'new' sketching travel box, already in a state!

I mostly use traditional Sax oil paints. They're very expensive, natural pigment and hand made, but they are glorious!

The brushes are Black Hog hair - my favourite at the moment.

Secessionville Painting: The Campbell Brothers from Crieff

This year, in Crieff, a series of events will take place celebrating two brothers who emigrated to America from Crieff in 1856 and found themselves fighting on opposing sides in the American Civil War.
The Campbell Brothers were brought up in the street I live in, Mitchell Street, so it makes it even more special to have received a commission from the 'Celebration150' group to undertake the painting of a large oil which will be the centrepiece of an exhibition in Crieff that will include Union and Confederate uniforms, 'Loaner Colours' and work from local schools based upon the story.

This week, my son, (sporting his 'Prostrate November Tache), & I, repainted a grotto I did around 10 years ago. Made from MDF, it was never intended for long term usage, but every year, the wee house has been touched up and rebuilt. A couple of years ago, the centre decided it had had its day and it was put in storage with bags of cement, bricks and piles of other might-be-handy-one-of-these-days stuff.

Every year lots of children have had their picture taken in front of it. There's a certain appeal about the little house that children are drawn to. When the centre invested in a lovely Cinderella carriage, the young people missed Santa's wee house and it was re-instated!

I think its going to look good. I was unsure about it becoming an ice-house, (blue is such a cold colour), but it sparkles nicely having been sprayed with silver glitter; the proof will be in the reaction by Santa's customers...

It may not be the best face painting I've ever done, but it met with much appreciation and happiness!

Everyone was looking forward to their party later and getting all dressed up.

Quite a few of the staff got painted too, but I only managed a few 'phone photos.

Well done to all who got painted- especially the Grange staff member who had to catch the bus!

Last weeks best job! Finishing Fountain Park Community Mural

I've completed Fountain Park Community Mural, after 3 weeks of variable weather, the worst being wind: (I've learned all about 'the Venturi Effect - the action of wind around large buildings), gusts of which made my legs turn to jelly a couple of times, resulting in me losing my bottle on the scaffold and giving in! I had some wonderful help from pupils of Boroughmuir H.S. and some great drawings from clients of the Garvald Institute and Fountainbridge Library reading groups.

A face painting jam is a get together of face painters who share their skills and technical know how.
Last week a group of us went to 'Mary's Tribal Jam'.
Mary Fairgrieve's work is exceptional and she opened her home to what turned out to be a bunch of happy nutters...with their children... She tried her best to teach us something and we all tried our best to play with paint. Prizes and even a certificate were given. Yours truly won...nothing.

I did get Triballed by another fantastic facepainter, Annie D and was morphed into a celtic warrior through the photoshop skills of the only male painter attending - Al Reid.

It was altogether a fun happy sunny day and an excellent bonding session! Usually we face painters only know of each other through work, so it's a joy to get to know one another properly.

I face paint under the name 'Metamorface'. A name, we, (we are a team), achieved over a couple of G & T's!
The lovely Brenda Binnie won the coveted Metamorface certificate.

Spent a couple of days with Bannockburn PS last week making mosaics and withy structures. The P5 kids did really well - full on energy.
I had to take everything home and deliver them on Wed. Of course, the birds are life size; that means they are enormous! Wingspan of over 8 feet; my wee Corsa car has a wingspan of 4feet; birds will have to be in pieces and assembled on delivery!

They will be displayed in a month or so at the david Marshall Lodge in Aberfoyle.

Having been a guest at an engagement party on a cold Spring night where the highlight was a tour around the haunted rooms of Castle Menzies, complete with chilly gusts, I got to speaking with John Jack.
John turned out to be the castle administrator and he invited me to bring along a few paintings of the place to try and sell.
He bought the lot and asked me to paint another, larger one, which I'll get round to...eventually!
Here they are. They're all small, (around 12 - 18 inches square), oils on board, done quickly outdoors and finished off in the studio

When you've finished a painting session, you should always wash your brushes! However I find that I quite often think I'll be returning to my latest 'masterpiece'...soon.. then, of course, life gets in the way. By the time I've returned, the brushes, even if I've wrapped them in plastic, will need reviving.

My cleaning method using left over soap always works, whether for immediate cleaning or for hardened paint.

Break entitlements

I haven't had time this week to write up my usual how-to blog. Lots of the work both this week and last has been face-painting. Easter being a face-painting splurge! With most jobs starting around lunchtime.
This has thrown up questions regarding lunch breaks. This is a question which has been asked before of me so I thought I might clarify the position and hope that it's helpful / useful.
In law, a person is entitled to a 20 minute break per 6 hr continuous working time, this may include travel time to and from the workplace, but that is discretional. If the start time isn't 'normal' - perhaps the job starts at lunchtime - it is up to yourself to eat properly. In this day and age, working patterns are variable. We need to move with the times and adapt.
Timings of the breaks are set by whoever pays! It's usual for a break to be midway of a job, no matter the start time, however this is also at the bosses discretion.

Watercolour Painting:

Paints; I would recommend a student quality half pan sketching box and adding a tube of zinc white goache to it.

Selection of brushes; Goat's hair Mop or wash brush, Squirrel hair No.8 and 1inch flat, Sable No.6and a riggeer.

Mediums; Boiled or distilled water.

Sundries; Water container or 2, 2B soft pencil, eraser, soft soap for brush washing, masking tape, drawing board.

Supports; Watercolour paper and/ or sketch pad.

Acrylic Painting:

Paints; I would recommend a student quality starter kit and get to know your preferred colours. Mine are;

White; Titanium (Zinc if available) Reds; Cadmium, Alizarin Crimson

Browns; Burnt Sienna, Raw Sienna Blues; Ultramarine Phthalo

Yellows; Ochre, Cadmium yellow Lemon yellow Deep

Greens; Phthalo, Chromium Oxide

Selection of brushes; Hog's hair No.12 round, No.4 Flat, No.6 short flat. Nylon; Try Nos. 4,6, flats an 8 round and a No.6 rigger.

Palette; Plastic is best, or better still use tear off paper ones.

Mediums; To start with, I would use a P.V.A water mix.

Sundries; Water containers, rags, charcoal, 4B soft pencil, painting shirt, soft soap for brush cleaning.

Easel; Tabletop is small, handy and useful.

Supports; Acrylic and watercolour papers, primed board and canvas.

Oil Painting:

Paints; I would recommend a student quality and get to know your preferred colours Mine are;

White; Titanium and Zinc Reds; Cadmium, Alizarin Crimson,Madder Lake

Browns; Burnt Umber,Burnt Sienna, Raw Sienna Blues; Ultramarine, Ceruleun

Yellows; Ochre, Cadmium yellow Deep and Lemon

Greens; Veridian,, Emerald

Selection of brushes; Hog's hair No.12 round, No.4 Long Flat, No.6 short flat..Ox hair No.10 short flat, No.10 long flat, No.6 long flat. Nylon – good substitute for Sable, try Nos. 4,6, 10 8 round and a No.6 rigger..

Painting knives; are flexible, I recommend a long pointed one. For working the paint on the support.

Palette; Try before you buy! Make sure it's comfortable, let it rest on your forearm with your thumb through the hole and your fingers in the hollowed edge. It should have enough space to mix colours on. A thick sheet of glass or plastic flexiglass is ideal if you have somewhere to rest. Tear off palettes are a practical solution, especially for painting outdoors. A cheap alternative is greaseproof paper.

Mediums; White spirit for cleaning brushes. May be used for 1^st layer of painting. Distilled Turpentine and Refined Linseed Oil, thinning agents for mixing with paint. (I use a 2:1 oil/turps mix).

Sundries; Jars and/or tins, for mixing and cleaning brushes. Rags, painting shirt, charcoal for drawing.

Easels; Tabletop is small, handy and useful.Portable is handy but can be unstable.

Supports; Canvas board, Universal board, Primed Hardboard, Plyboard, Chipboard MDF, Oil painting paper

Cleaning Equipment; Soft soap is best, although washing upliquid works well.
